Dynamic form using 4 values

This weeks classwork involved painting over a silhouette of a Mech. Our instructions for this assignment were:

You have been supplied with a photoshop file containing the silhouette of the mech character already blocked in with 85% grey and 3 further value swatches to paint with.

Using the 3 remaining value swatches, paint in the lit surfaces and the line work as accurately as you can from the reference pic. This is also an exercise in developing your craft, visual judgement and hand eye coordination.
Be sure to place the values consistently:
·      Use the lightest value only for the upward facing surfaces
·      The medium value for the front/angled surfaces.
·      The darkest value is for the minimal linework and shadow areas.
Use the Hard Round Pressure Size brush (4th in the default set). Set opacity to 100%. Paint solid areas of value, no soft edges or scritchy scratchy waffle!

The silhouette looked like this:

I followed the assignments instructions and started to build up the colour.

Once I had finished building up the colour I duplicated the mech twice and reduced the value range.

Battle Arena Development

Over the past couple of months I have been developing my battle arena. I changed the model several times as I was unhappy with the appearance as I felt it didn't depict the theme I was going for .

This was my original concept for my battle arena.

However, I developed the arena by adding in a bumpy terrain to give the appearance of sand and changed the temple. I did some further research into Mayan/Inca architecture and applied it to  my temple model. Here is a wireframe of the finished design.

I then textured the arena using UV maps. Here is an example of what I created in Photoshop for the sides of my temple.

This is the completed battle arena with textures including props and foliage.

I then created a unity project where I placed the arena into and added a skybox to create an atmosphere. I also animated the camera and exported it to display the full arena.

This is the complete arena.

Scripting

I currently have several doors with a scripted automatic event and a light switch in my grey box. There is an error with my doors as they do not carry out the action I would like them to. However, my light turns on when you activate the switch.

Here are screenshots of the working event:

Anthropomorphic Frog

This weeks task for Visual design was to create an anthropomorphic frog. For inspiration I took to google to look for some images of anthropomorphic characters. I particularly focused on characters that were dressed up or had human type features such as hair. I created a mood board for reference.

I then opened a blank canvas in photoshop and sketched out an outline for my frog character.

Once I had my outline I looked back at my mood board to find inspiration for a good colour palette to use for my character. I noticed the majority of the images were brightly coloured so I settled for contrasting greens.

I added lipstick, a necklace and bow to my character to give the indication of her age. My character is supposed to be a teenager similar to Coco from Crash Bandicoot. I didn't want to add too many human characteristics to my character as I think it would lose its appearance of a frog.

Perspective and lighting: Tank

This weeks task was to create a simple concept for a futuristic tank using perspective and lighting. I did some quick research into basic shapes of tanks. Here is the mood board.

I drew a mock design using perspective lines.

And here is my final concept for a tank using perspective and lighting.

I changed a lot of features in my final design as I thought my initial concept was unrealistic.

Perspective in Environment design

This weeks given task was to establish the vanishing points and eye level of a supplied image using the techniques we had learnt the previous week and the create our own Sci-Fi styled environment.

As per usual I created a mood board so I could refer to images whilst designing my environment.

Below is my final environment design in perspective.

Overcoming Errors In Unity And Adapting Created Atmosphere

I have ended up changing my scripted events for my grey box as it has caused errors. My current grey box has several scripted events which include a light switch and automatic doors. I have also reviewed my given feedback and incorporated a maze of crates to give the player a sense of direction on how to progress further.

Tentacles

This weeks task was to create a monster that had three tentacles or more. Below is a mood board containing research of existing characters with tentacles.

I roughly sketched out two monsters and coloured them in to experiment with different approaches to the task.

I then took to Photoshop to create my final design. I tool aspects from my initial designs such as the tentacles coming from the face and three eyes.
Overall I was pretty pleased with my outcome. I used a technique that involved layering a bubbly texture over my digital painting. This created a raised feeling to the tentacle monster. I do think it's quite a flat painting so by adding the texture I felt like it made the monster more shaped.

Texture Map Deconstruction and Analysis

This week we were given the task to alter a texture map of a girl and turn her into a zombie. The original texture map appeared like this.

Before turning the girl into a zombie we had to make the following changes first:

·        change the jackets colour by altering the Base Colour layer
·        Find a cloth texture image online to replace the existing one
·        Add a new logo to the back of the jacket.

I altered the green jacket by changing the colour to pink and I added an embossed logo to the back of the jacket. I also adjusted the girls face by finding a photograph of a model and layering it on top of the current face. I then began to add features to make the girl appear like a zombie.

Above is all the detail I added to the texture map.

Here is the final 3d model.

Battle Area - 3D Production

For the 3D production side of my course I have been asked to create a battle arena using Maya. Like any other project I researched into different ideas and created a mood board to display my battle arena concept.

I looked into games that are based in a post - apocalyptic/urban jungle environment such as the game submerged. I also like certain elements from fallout 3 and Aztec architecture. I began by creating basic features in Maya as shown below.

I created this mood board to display where my ideas came from. I like the environmental detail from submerged and would like to create similar tropical foliage in my battle arena. The basic architecture of  my arena was inspired by Mayan culture and I have tired to reflect that in my modelling.

This is my current model of a battle arena. My next step is to refine the basic polygons, create a backdrop, create foliage and begin texturing.

Life Drawing

I have been to several life drawing sessions to improve my drawing skills.

With these two drawings I was testing a technique which involved erasing away areas to show contours of light on the body. Quite a tricky technique but fun to do.

This is from a more in depth drawing session where we were given half an hour to draw as much of model as we could accurately. Unfortunately I didn't finish mine however, I am quite fond of the lack of detail.

Lava Creature

We were give the task to create a lava monster in Photoshop using different layer styles and texture details.

Here are 2 of my rough ideas on how I wanted my monster to look.

I preferred elements of this design so incorporated it into my final design.

Creating A Barrel In Maya

As a part of my battle arena project, I had to model and texture a barrel in Maya. I learned how to UV unwrap the polygons and create a texture in Photoshop.

I initially found the process quite difficult but after going over the tutorial several times I progressed with my 3D modelling.

Pixel art robot

This weeks task involved creating a robot using pixel art. Pixel art is a simple digital art form which can be created in photoshop. It was originally used back when games were first developed as the resolution was limited for consoles.

Here is my pixel robot design. My robot has the ability to hover rather than walk. I enjoyed this exercise as I learnt a new technique of visual design and I will now apply this to further projects where able to do so.

Empty

Storyboard: This is my storyboard for the opening of my game called Empty. It is about a man who finds himself exploring an old, isolated warehouse.

Map Plan: This is my map for the opening level of the game. The player must complete and eerie maze to progress to the exit.

One sheet: This is my one sheet. It explains my aims and ideas for my game.

Futuristic Weapon Assignment

For this project we were asked to draw a futuristic gun after researching real life and fantasy weaponry. I gathered some ideas from my research and created 3 designs.

I was inspired by a gun featured in Mass effect which lead to me experimenting with different shapes and colour.

This design of mine is my favourite as I like the overall compostion. However, in my final design I went for a more basic configuration and colour scheme.

Here is my final design.

Body Proportions

We were given the task to draw a dwarf using the correct body proportions.  We were told that our dwarfs had to measure up to 4 heads tall therefore I used a measurement guide to help me. Certain features of a dwarf are elongated such as the waist and arms to establish the character type.

Perspective homework

For our homework we were set a task of following a one point perspective drawing tutorial. Here is my outcome.

Character Silhouettes

When drawing these silhouettes I experimented with different body shapes and formats. I was inspired by features from crustaceans and in particular lobsters. I mimicked certain visual aspects from  lobsters and applied them to my characters.

Pop art movement

Pop art is an art movement that challenged conventions of fine art and characterized consumerism and pop culture. It emerged during the 1950s and was the leading movement in the United Kingdom and America until the late 1960s. It is still an art style that many contemporary artists use to convey messages about the modern world.

Typical fine art traditions involved the use of symmetry, perspective, proportion and balance, something which pop art tested. For example early Christian paintings of Jesus used near-symmetry to balance certain aspects of the painting and make Jesus appear dominant. However, pop artists used techniques such as collaging and mixed media to create an ensemble of fine art traditions. Richard Hamilton was a pop artist who challenged these traditions. He was renowned for his collages which presented themes of sexism, consumerism, celebrity life and the space age. His collages presented these themes in a form that reflected traditional art values, an example is 'Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing?'. I think that Hamilton has used the traditional technique of balancing out the canvas to achieve a flowing collage.

I think that pop art has influenced many art based industries. For example aspects of pop art culture have been presented through architecture, furniture design, concept art.

My Robot design

Here is my concept design for a robot character. Her name is Zadia 3000. She was originally created to protect her inventor from raiders. However, gained so much intelligence and turned against him.
